Many times the Bible mentions getting rid of things that cause us to stumble.
“If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away.” Matthew 18:8
“If your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off.” Mark 9:45
“If your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away.” Matthew 5:30
As I was cleaning up the other day, I realized that my foot was “stuff.” Unfortunately, I was not blessed with the “neat freak” bug. I’m pretty messy. As I was cleaning up the other day, putting away piles and piles of clothes, I heard the Spirit say, “cut off your foot.”
In that moment, I knew that the source of my cleaning problem was that I simply had too much stuff. Some people can handle a lot of things. They are organizers who can have their closets nearly sorted and color coordinated. I am not that person… and that’s OK. I just have to take measures to ensure that I am able to maintain order in my life, and that means getting rid of extra stuff, or “cutting off my foot.”
Now, I don’t know what your “foot” is. Your feet may be alcohol, credit cards, men/women, junk food, a gossiping friend, etc. Whatever your foot may be, God is asking you to cut it off. His desire is not for you to stumble over the same thing over and over.
A messy house won’t keep me out of Heaven, and your “foot” might not either. But it can prevent you from fully enjoying your time here on Earth. What are some things that you need to let go of?
